I began working on the Series EMOTIONS in 2025. All works in this series are inspired by the traditional PATUA art from Bengal, India.
PATUA art, also known as Patachitra, is a traditional scroll painting form that originated centuries ago in West Bengal, India. Deeply rooted in folk culture, it has been passed down through generations of artists, known as Patuas.
Historically, Patua artists would paint long, narrative scrolls and travel from village to village, unrolling them while singing songs that narrated mythological stories in the art. These performances blended visual storytelling with music and dramatic voice to educate and entertain rural audiences. The themes often drew from mythology, folklore, and daily life, enriched with vibrant representations of nature—fish, birds, foliage, and flowers—capturing the imagination of the viewers.
Though deceptively simple in appearance, Patua art carries an intricate beauty. It employs vivid, natural colors and stylized forms to captivate attention during live performances.
My work here draws inspiration from this remarkable tradition, reinterpreting the Patua aesthetic through a contemporary lens while honoring its roots in storytelling and Nature. Below are FOR SALE mini artworks 5" x 7", acrylic on canvas.
